If you were to base your guess on what the music of Matthew E. White would sound like by solely looking at him, you’d likely peg him for being the front-man for a crunchy Southern-rock jamband. To the contrary, the bearded, long-haired singer-songwriter, who released his highly recommended debut album Big Inner back in August, has crafted a sound that’s drenched in the slow-burn, baby-making sounds of Stax funk and soul, mixed with elements of gospel, folk and rock.
